Berlin – known almost all over the world:
The German capital attracts millions of tourists, especially because of its important history. Even more exciting is the view of the famous landmarks and places in Berlin in comparison to the past and present. I took pictures of the same places again.
On my blog I am collecting all the pictures and visualization of my journey in Berlin. I want to show you in this article how it has changed.
One of the most important photographers in Berlin in the first half of the 20th century was Max Missmann (1874-1945), an architecture, industry, illustration, landscape and technology photographer.
Growing up in Kreuzberg, Missmann was initially trained as a decorator, but at the age of 24 he changed his profession again and became a photographer.
Hermann Rückwardt (1845-1919) was a German photographer and publisher known for architectural photography. He published a series of portfolios with thematic focuses such as the Berlin City Palace, Museum Island, wooden buildings, Berlin bridges and railway buildings. He frequently worked with architects and art historians in these series.
Waldemar Titzenthaler (1869-1937) set up his own photography studio in 1897 and soon became one of the first German advertising photographers to include important Berlin companies among his clients. The photo plates were purchased by the Berlin State Archives and are now protected by them. All plates are kept in the State Archives.
We must not forget that digital photos did not exist back then. Today, we have a wide variety of options for taking photos of landscapes, architecture, people, nature and so on…Therefore, it is an extraordinary work that is both surprising and should be appreciated.
Here are some before-and-after comparisons.
