First of all, I would like to know how fear of heights develops.
What is the origin of the fear?
What happens in the human body?
- The fear of heights, also known as acrophobia, can originate from a variety of factors, including genetics, past experiences, and learned behavior. Some people may be more predisposed to developing a fear of heights due to their genetic makeup, while others may develop the fear as a result of a traumatic experience, such as falling from a height or witnessing someone else fall.
When a person experiences a fear of heights, their body may respond in a number of ways. The amygdala, which is the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions, may become activated, triggering the body’s “fight or flight” response. This can cause physical symptoms such as increased heart rate, sweating, and trembling.
Additionally, the body may release stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, which can further exacerbate the physical symptoms of fear. Over time, repeated exposure to heights can reinforce the fear and make it more difficult to overcome.
It’s important to note that everyone experiences fear differently, and there is no one-size-fits-all explanation for the origin of the fear of heights. If you are struggling with a fear of heights, it may be helpful to speak with a mental health professional who can help you identify the underlying causes and develop strategies for managing the fear.
I think I found out how my fear of heights developed a few years ago. An acquaintance reported watching a documentary about airplane crashes. He vividly recounted, down to the smallest detail, what happened in one of the documented plane crash scenarios. Up to that point, I had no fear whatsoever of getting on an airplane. I may have taken these scenarios to heart and developed a fear of heights as a consequence.
It wasn’t just that I was afraid to get on the plane. Even tall buildings made me increasingly uncomfortable. For me, fear means being restricted and unfree at the same time, so I decided to face it in small steps. I started with one of my favorite activities. Hiking. Standing in front of the now vanished wooden tower “Goetheturm” near Frankfurt am Main, I decided to walk up the steps and look down at the parapet. I understood it as the first training and gave myself a lot of time. Under no circumstances could I put myself under pressure, otherwise my plan to reach my goal would fail.
Self-Test:
My first attempt took a few hours longer than I had planned. It had already started to dawn when I finally arrived at the top. My knees were trembling and I was astonished at how a boy of about five seemed to have no fear in climbing the stairs briskly.
But it had worked out well. I had a wonderful view and although I was physically very tense, I focused on capturing the environment photographically. I will share my captures at the end of the post.
I have definitely earned a reward. I succeeded in my first attempt to overcome my fear of heights. I was proud of myself.
As mentioned, I took many small steps to overcome my fear of heights. I became successful in any case, because it made me get ready for a tandem paragliding jump.
In summary, here are ten strategies I would like to share on how to overcome fear of heights.
10 strategies that can help you overcome your fear of heights:
1. Gradual exposure: Start by exposing yourself to heights in small doses and gradually increase the height over time.

As I wrote before I started several self-tests and one of the hardest was to commit to a tandem paragliding jump.
